doPDF is an interesting alternative to convert document to PDF. It is a free PDF creator for Windows that acts as a virtual printer. It supports all kinds of documents as long as they are printable.

doPDF lacks the advanced features of the paid versions, doPDF premium and novaPDF, but it is still more useful than the built-in printing functionality in Windows. Its PDF output presets, for example, allow you to create PDF files for web publishing without having to configure the printing task repeatedly.

Features and Highlights

doPDF sends anonymous usage statistics by default. If you don’t like it, unselect the check box at the first window that appears after you double-click the installer. The check box is located at the bottom right corner at the time of this writing. You can also uncheck the option to install doPDF add-in for Microsoft Office if you don’t need it.

There are two ways you can create PDF files with doPDF. First, by using the Print command in every application that has it. Second, by using its conversion wizard.

The wizard is accessible from the Start menu. It allows converting only one file to PDF at a time. Since it doesn’t support drag and drop, you have to navigate to the document from within the wizard by clicking the Browse button next to the file selection field.

According to the help page, it is designed to be used as a quick access, but adding a conversion option in context menu would make the task quicker and easier instead. Unfortunately, such an option is not available in doPDF.

doPDF has three output presets: Smallest File produces a highly compressed PDF file, Medium compresses the output moderately, and Best Quality converts the document into a high quality PDF file. No option to create your own preset, though.

doPDF adds document metadata to the output by default which include Title, Subject, Author, Keywords, and Creator. On the other hand, the option to embed all fonts needs to be enabled first if you need it. Embedding the fonts will increase the output size, but it is worth it to make sure that the resulting PDF uses the same fonts when it is opened in other devices.

When doPDF is running, its tray icon is visible. It shows latest news and notifications. If you think the icon isn’t useful that much to keep around, you can turn it off so that it won’t appear anymore in the tray.

doPDF Free Download for Windows

Unlike the paid versions, doPDF shows ads in Save dialog. Furthermore, it cannot password protect, merge, encrypt, and sign PDF files. It cannot insert text and image watermarks into PDF files too. Most of these features are not even available in doPDF Premium. Only novaPDF Pro has the complete features.

In terms of free features, doPDF has less than PDF Creator developed by pdfforge. One of the most obvious differences between the two is the lack of option in doPDF to right-click a file in File Explorer to load it into the conversion window.
