The Canon iP4000 is a fairly cheap to buy printer aimed at consumers seeking for a reliable option to print photos. Many other printers can also print photos, but not all of them are armed with five ink cartridges and photo-centric features.

Additionally, the printer has other features that are not exactly related to photo printing but very handy for everyday printing needs, like duplexer and dual paper trays. It also has a dedicated tray for direct printing on compact discs.

Features and Highlights

At the time it was released, the Canon iP4000 was bigger than other PIXMA printers, with a width of 16.5 inches, a height of 6.8 inches, and a depth of 11.3 inches. It weighs 14.9 pounds.

The top cover of the Canon iP4000 lifts to reveal five individual ink cartridges. Two of them are black ink cartridges. One is a dye-based ink and the other one is a pigment-based ink. One has the same amount of ink like that of the color cartridges, while the other one contains plenty more ink. The addition of an extra black cartridge is aimed at producing better quality photos, while the other back is to produce sharp text.

There are many printers with tri-color cartridges around, so it is great to see that Canon decided to use individual cartridges for the Canon iP4000. Whether tri-color cartridges are more costly in the long run is a debatable topic, but at least users won’t risk throwing away an entire cartridge just because one of the three colors runs out. Ink cartridges are the highest cost that printer owners have to bear, so preventing such risk sounds a very good idea to do.

What makes it even more attractive is that it has two paper trays, each for 150 sheets at maximum. Swapping paper is not a difficult thing to do, but it could become a bother if you find yourself doing it much more often than you’d be willing to. With this extra paper tray, which is fairly hidden at the bottom of the printer, you can have a different paper in each tray so that you won’t have to swap paper anymore.

It doesn’t matter if you need to print text documents or photos or anything else possible, the Canon iP4000 needs to be connected to a computer to get the job done. Unfortunately, it only supports wired connection via either its parallel or USB 1.1 port.
