The HP OfficeJet 3830 is a great pick for low-volume printing and copying needs. It is relatively low on price but it has a respectable performance and quality, which makes it a printer worthy to be taken into consideration when you need one that won’t empty your wallet.

Some of its features include a 2.2-inch touchscreen, quiet mode, fax capability, direct printing, flatbed, and manual duplex. While this printer seems to be a good bargain, it isn’t without shortcomings, however.

Features and Highlights

The HP OfficeJet 3830 looks compact and elegant. When all the paper trays are opened, it measures 450 mm wide, 572.9 mm deep, and 270.7 mm. The paper trays include the pull-up input tray and the fold-down output tray, both of which can be closed when the printer is not in use to free up some space on your desk.

The input tray has a few disadvantages. If you leave stacks of paper in it, they will get dusty over time. Also, only a meager sixty sheets can be loaded into the input tray.

The output tray holds even much fewer sheets, which is not more than twenty five sheets. This very limited capacity can be disadvantageous when printing a large number of documents.

On the plus side, HP adds an automatic document feeder (ADF) on the top of the OfficeJet 3830. It holds a meager 35 sheets only. However, thanks to the presence of this feeder for copying, faxing, and scanning, you don’t have to feed the sheets manually, which could be tiring and boring sometimes, depending on how many documents you need to fax, scan, or copy.

The HP OfficeJet 3830 uses a mix of four colors to produce high-quality prints. The colors are separated into two ink cartridges, one of which is a type of cartridge called tri-color cartridge. The name is based on the number of colors available in the cartridge.

There is one thing that many people don’t know yet despite the cartridges have been around for years. It is the fact that a tri-color cartridge is no longer usable if any of the three colors is empty, which is why there is a chance that you could end up paying a lot more than its purchase price to keep the printer running. In short, a tri-color cartridge isn’t a wise choice if you often have large print jobs.

Another piece of essential information to know about this printer is that it should never be used to print more than one thousand A4 pages. Doing so would only increases the risk of damaging it. And while you can call for a repair service, not every problem can be fixed. You may end up having to buy a new printer sooner than your expectation.
