For anyone who needs a portable sheet-feed document scanner, Epson DS 310 is worth a look. It costs more than manual-feed scanner, but it saves time a lot if you often do scan jobs consisting of multiple pages.

Weighing 1.1 kg, Epson DS 310 is a fairly light device, and its slim body is a perfect fit for tight spaces. When you finish scanning, you can store the scanner in a drawer to leave even more work space on your desk. Believe it or not, an uncluttered desk can help you focus more on your work.

Features and Highlights

Epson DS 310 has a small lever at the front of its body to lock the input tray in its place when it is not used to scan anything. Slide the lever to the left, raise the input tray, and you’ll get access to its 20-sheet automatic document feeder.

The tray has an extension which can be pulled out if the media that you’re going to scan is too big for the tray. After inserting the originals into the tray, adjust the two edge guides to fit them. When the scanner starts working, the automatic document feeder will feed the originals into the printer, one at a time.

The control panel consists of three buttons (Start, Stop, Power) and three status LEDs. If the scanner encounters a problem during operation, the error indicator light is on or flashes, depending on the problem. For example, if the light is on while the Ready light is flashing, the error may be a paper jam or double feed. The Ready light shows whether the scanner is ready or not. If it is off, perhaps the problem has something to do with the power or a particular error.

Unlike the Stop and Stop buttons which do not have additional functions, aside from starting a scan, the Start button can also be used to clean the inside of the scanner. It’s a multifunction button.

Epson DS 310 can scan ID cards too. It has a dedicated slot for the task. To scan a card, it needs to be inserted into the slot, which is at the front-left of the scanner’s body. The scanner will draw the card into the slot, and then roll it back out after it finishes scanning the card.

Offline storage is not the only destination to which the scanner can deliver the output. Online storage is also supported. If you have a Dropbox account, you can send the scans to the storage. Google Drive, which offers a much larger free space to each of its registered users, is also among the supported cloud storage services.

Epson DS 310 is not made for people who need wireless scanning because it doesn’t have any Wi-Fi functionality. Only a USB 3.0 cable is provided for the connection.
