The HP ENVY 4500 is a budget AIO printer, but it has a number of features that are commonly found in pricier printers. Automatic duplex printing, mobile printing, email printing, wireless support, and so on.

That list of features easily gives the impression that the printer is an incredible bargain. But, as soon as you use the printer, you will slowly begin to notice that they come at a price.

Features and Highlights

Running on two ink cartridges, the HP ENVY 4500 can print as many as 190 monochrome pages and 165 color pages. The higher yield version offers more ink to print up to 480 pages in black and 330 pages in color.

It is worth noting that one of the cartridges used on the HP ENVY 4500 is a tri-color cartridge. This is one of the disadvantages that one has to live with if he or she decides to bring the printer home.

Some users, however, believe that the ink cost per page of a tri-color cartridge is the same as an individual color cartridge, if not even less. They argue that it is rare that people frequently print in one color only. Therefore, the chance of one color to run out sooner than the other two in a tri-color cartridge is minimal.

If you’re worried about the ink cost, HP offers what it calls the “Instant Ink” plan, which is a subscription service where you need to pay every month to enjoy the benefits. However, it is quite aggressive in asking users to join the plan, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all if there are some users who feel annoyed with all the repeated questions.

Before starting a print job, the first thing to do is to make sure that there are enough sheets in the input tray. If you want to load as many sheets as possible, keep in mind that its maximum capacity is 100 sheets of plain paper.

Under the output tray is a paper support to receive the printed pages, but it only holds a maximum of thirty sheets, and unfortunately it cannot guarantee that it will catch every single sheet that comes out of the HP ENVY 4500 if you print more than about ten pages.

The 100 sheets that you load in the input tray will be delivered to the front of the printer with the printable side facing upward at a rated speed of up to 8.8 ppm for black pages and up to 5.2 ppm for color pages. These speeds are relatively slow by current standards, but they should not pose too much of a problem for personal printing.
