As with other printers, Canon iP1880 can print text documents, but it is mainly designed for printing long-lasting photos. It offers a decent print speed and is bundled with a number of software to help users get the most out of the printer.

Considering the price of the printer, it comes as no surprise that some photo-oriented features are missing on the machine, but its print quality is better than some basic photo printers out there.

Features and Highlights

Don’t expect anything fancy from its design as it is designed to be as simple as possible as a single function printer. The body of the printer measures 442 mm by 237 mm by 152 mm (W x D x H). It has a paper support flap featuring adjustable paper guides but lacks an output tray. Instead of a control panel, only two buttons can be found on the top surface of the printer.

Just like many other Canon printers, the hybrid ink system is implemented on Canon iP1880. The system is made up of two ink cartridges. Replacing any of the cartridge is not difficult, even for first-time users. They can be replaced  easily either with standard-capacity replacement cartridges (PG-40 and CL-41) or low-capacity replacement cartridges (PG-830 and CL-831).

Both PG-40 and PG-830 are black ink cartridges. On the other hand, CL-41 and CL-831 are tri-color ink cartridges.

If the inks are used for printing color documents, PG-830 and PG-40 can produce up to 220 sheets and 355 sheets, respectively. CL-41 and CL-831 can produce up to 308 sheets and 205 sheets, respectively.

If the inks are used for printing 4 x 6 photos, PG-830 and PG-40 can produce up to 1390 sheets and 2165 sheets, respectively. CL-41 and CL-831 can produce up to 102 sheets and 82 sheets, respectively.

Canon iP1880 can print text at a rate of 20 pages per minute on plain papers, and print images at a rate of approximately 139 seconds per 8″ x 10″ image and approximately 70 seconds per 4 x 6 borderless photo. The inks are claimed to be able to produce photos that last for 100 years, thanks to a particular technology named FINE cartridge. However, the longevity is only achievable if the photos are printed on Canon photo papers such as Photo Paper Plus Glossy and Glossy Photo Paper.

Considering the low price, the lack of some photo-related features and wireless connectivity is reasonable, but the absence of an output tray is quite puzzling. Also, the use of hybrid ink system produces an adequate print quality on plain papers, but the ink cost may become a problem in the long run.
