Epson T50 is a mostly black inkjet printer designed to produce photo prints by relying on dye-based ink stored in six ink cartridges. Each ink cartridge is a separate unit so it can be replaced individually when the ink is empty.

The ink cartridges are hidden inside the printer’s body, covered by the top panel that users can open when one or more of the cartridges need to be replaced. There are a few steps to follow but overall it is easy to replace the ink cartridges.

Features and Highlights

A single USB cable is the only connectivity option available on Epson T50. The good news is that the package includes a USB cable, as well as the six ink cartridges and other items, so users do not have to shell out more money to buy one.

Papers, including envelopes, are loaded from the back  of the printer with the help of a paper support and sheet feeder. The paper capacity depends on the type of papers that are loaded in the tray. For plain papers, it’s 120 sheets. For Epson Premium Ink Jet Plain Paper, it’s 100 sheets. For Epson Photo Quality Self Adhesive Sheets and Epson Photo Stickers, it’s only one sheet.

The front tray has an extension which users can slide out to temporarily hold the printouts. Above the output tray is a control panel which consists of three simple buttons (power, ink, paper) and three light indicators (power, ink expended, paper out).

The light indicators help users to diagnose common problems such as paper jam, multiple feed error, CD/DVD tray jam, wrong cartridge, and ink low. For example, when the paper out indicator is flashing slowly, it means the paper is jammed or the output tray is not positioned properly. If the indicator is flashing fast together with the ink expended indicator, and the power light indicator is off, it means something unknown has happened to the printer that causes it to stop working. If this happens, users may need to take the printer to a service center.

Epson T50 can print on CD or DVD too. It has a CD/DVD tray which can hold 12-cm CD/DVD without using the adapter and 8-cm CD/DVD with the help of the adapter. The tray is also included in the package and users are advised to use it instead of using another one to make sure that the printer can print on the CD/DVD properly.

As with other cartridge-based photo printers, the ink cartridge cost is very high. When the ink cartridges that come together with the printer are empty, that’s when they need to be replaced, and the cost of the total replacement is almost like buying a new Epson T50 printer.
