The Canon E510 is a four-color MFP with a flatbed but no automatic document feeder (ADF). It uses cartridges, so it is certainly not for anyone looking for an ink tank printer, which is usually more favorable due to its lower running cost but unfortunately its higher upfront cost often discourages consumers from buying it.

It is an MFP without any component that supports faxing documents, to be precise. The lack of that particular capability is what makes some people call it a printer with extra functionalities rather than an all-in-one printer.

Features and Highlights

Some consumers might get surprised that the Canon E510 only has two cartridges despite using four colors to print pages. Such a composition is possible because one of the cartridges, which is CL-98, houses three colors in one place. As for the PG-88, it is an individual cartridge, which is a term for the type of cartridge that contains only one color.

There is an opinion that a tri-color cartridge is a cheaper solution for a personal printer aimed at low volume printing needs, and this becomes one of the reasons why there are still people buying printers that run on a tri-color cartridge.

The other reason would be the upfront price that is typically lower than that of an ink tank printer. Canon and every other printer manufacturer have been allegedly lowering the purchase prices on purpose so that they can get more money from the tri-color ink cartridges.

The Canon E510 utilizes more than one thousand nozzles to spread ink on paper, with each ink droplet as small as two picoliters. There are photo printers capable of producing 1-pl ink droplets, but two picoliters should be good enough for most people.

The printer is quite a wide one, with a width of 17.7 inches and a depth of 12 inches. It is still a footprint that fits on a desk, but sharing a desk with it would probably be impossible for some consumers who don’t have the luxury of a large desk and therefore need a separate desk to be able to place the printer next to where the computer monitors are located in the room.

Wireless connectivity isn’t a convenience that users can have too because Canon decided to limit the printer’s connectivity to local connection only by means of a USB cable. This limitation is the reason why the printer cannot stay far away from the computer monitors.
