The wide-format Epson R1900 is released three years after its the release date of its predecessor, the R1800. As a newer model, it comes with a more advanced ink technology to produce better photo print quality.

Interestingly, unlike the older model that uses the blue cartridge, the newer one replaces it with an orange cartridge. Both use the same pigment-based ink, however.

Eight Ink Cartridges

The Epson R1900 uses cyan, orange, magenta, red, yellow, matte black, and photo black. Unlike the Epson R2400, which also holds the same two black cartridges, the photo printer has the ability to switch between the two automatically based on the paper type you use for printing, freeing users from the confusion as to which of the two that needs to be used on certain papers.

The ink technology used by the printer is called Ultrachrome Hi-Gloss 2, which comes with a revamped gloss optimizer and removes the blue color in favor of the orange one to produce better skin tones.

Three USB Jacks

The photo printer has two USB jacks on its back, allowing users to connect it to more than one computer. There is another USB jack on the front of the printer, which is used to facilitate direct printing from a compatible digital camera. The bad news is there is no support for wireless printing.

Print Speed

Using the improved Advanced Micro Piezo print head that uses more than one hundred nozzles for each color, the Epson R1900 can finish printing a 5×7 photo in approximately 44 seconds, a 8×10 photo in approximately 72 seconds, or a 11×14 photo in approximately 1 minute 32 seconds.

Print Longevity

Epson claims that the Epson R1900 can produce photos that lasts more than one hundred years as long as the photos are printed on either Premium Photo Paper Glossy, Premium Presentation Paper Matte, or Watercolor Paper Radiant White. The last mentioned can even preserve the print quality up to 200 years.
