The Epson L540 packs multiple attractive features for home and small office printing and scanning. Its reasonable price is another reason of why the printer is worth buying.

For consumers who have a fairly strict budget for printing expenses, the most attractive feature of the printer is probably the ink system since it is designed to keep the printing cost down to a minimum.

Print Quality

The Epson L540 is capable of producing high quality prints, but printing at the highest resolution comes at the trade off of a higher cost per page. This is a good reason of why you should print documents in draft mode whenever possible. Its draft quality is obviously not as crisp as the standard one, but the text output is good enough for internal use.

However, if you use a third-party ink, your print quality mileage may vary even more. It is worth a shot, though, considering the not so inconsequential price gap between the original brand and third-party inks in general.

If you don’t want to take any chances and therefore prefer to stick to the original brand, the good news is that the printing cost is at least lower than if you use a printer with ink cartridges.

Scanner

It is more convenient to have a printer that can also scan pages instead of using two separate machines. In this case, the L540 is an excellent choice, especially for offices that scan almost, if not as often as they print.

The L540’s automatic document feeder is a time saving feature for scanning multiple pages. It pulls the originals into the machine automatically, one at a time, until there is none left. Its efficiency, however, is limited by its own paper capacity.

Paper Handling

All printers have a paper input tray, but there are some models that don’t come with any paper output tray. The L540 is, fortunately, among those models that offer an output tray. No matter how many pages you print or scan, each of them will be collected by the tray, which is easily accessible from the front of the printer.

As with the input trays, the output tray can only hold a certain amount of paper. Its capacity is actually lower that you might have to empty it during printing to make room for the incoming prints.

As for the sheet feeders, there is one for scanning and another for printing. Each provides an ample capacity to hold many sheets of paper. On the downside, there is no option available to increase the capacity.
