Epson claims that the L850 is a low cost solution for borderless printing. To improve its print quality, the company adds Light Cyan and Light Magenta inks into the printer’s ink set.

The ink tank system offers a high page yield, but refilling six ink tanks is more costly than the standard four. If print quality is a top priority, however, the higher ink cost might be justified.

Six Inks

Attached to its sleek body is an ink reservoir that opens to six tanks, each of which is easily refilled with a 70ml bottle of ink. The quoted yield is 3000 pages for a bottle of black ink and 5400 pages for three bottles of color ink. All of these combined can produce up to 1800 4R photo prints.

Larger Than Usual

The black unit spans 21.3 inches in width because of the ink reservoir. To be precise, it is the placement of the ink tank that makes the printer’s width larger than its cartridge-based counterparts or some other tank-based models that come with integrated ink reservoirs.

Paper stock is loaded in the rear tray, which holds up to 100 sheets of paper. When printing, each sheet passes through the printer until it ends up in the front tray.

Unlike many other MFPs that are equipped with a 30-sheet output tray each, the L850 is a bit more generous with its 50-sheet capacity.

However, the extra capacity comes with a trade-off of the printer’s height, which is about three inches taller than usual for a printer that is a part of the Epson’s L series.

More Printing Options

Direct Printing is one of the L850’s strong points. While other similar models only support printing from PictBridge cameras, the black MFP unit can print directly from memory devices (that support USB 2.0) and memory cards as well.

The front panel, which runs nearly the full width of the printer, can be easily lifted upward to provide a better viewing angle. But the feature that helps you to perform direct printing is the 2.7-inch TFT color LCD screen that sits adjacent to a number of touch buttons.

Flatbed Scanner

The top flat surface of the L850 lifts to reveal the only means to scan and copy pages. Since the 1200dpi scanner doesn’t have an automatic sheet feeder, scanning many pages would be a chore to finish. Let alone dozens of pages, scanning five or seven pages consecutively might be enough to make some users wish they had bought an MFP unit that has an ADF instead.
