The Epson R270 is another addition to the Stylus Photo lineup, providing more choices for users who are in need of a good but affordable photo printer. It features the patented Micro Piezo printhead, DX5 technology, PictBridge, and CD/DVD printing, to name a few.

There are bound to be a few things to dislike in every printer. The same goes with the R270. For a start, it has no LCD screen to view images and preview outputs. Its paper handling doesn’t include a straight through paper as well.

Features and Highlights

Two Paper Trays

The Stylus Photo R270 only has one sheet feeder in the back. When it folds out, you can drop a stack of no more than ninety sheets of 90 gsm paper or twenty sheets of photo paper. It has a pull-out extension to assist the printer in handling longer paper.

The sheet feeder cannot be upgraded. If your printing needs change, the only way to have more paper capacity is to get yourself a new printer, preferably one with a covered input tray to protect the loaded paper from dust.

The paper tray that is used to hold printed pages is located on the front of the printer’s body. The cover folds out to reveal some extensions that extend to support longer paper.

More Colors

In addition to the standard four colors of ink used by many consumer-grade printers, Epson adds Light Cyan and Light Magenta into the mix. Like the former, the two extra inks are packed in individual cartridges, which are more favorable to users than the tri-color counterparts.

PictBridge

While some photo printers has a control panel with an LCD screen to facilitate direct printing, the six-color printer doesn’t have it. Image selection is done directly from the camera’s screen.

Only cameras that support USB Direct Print or PictBridge can be used for direct printing. If you try to connect a camera that isn’t compatible with any of them, the paper and ink lights will flash alternately. Also, only JPEG images whose resolutions are no more than 9200 x 9200 pixels are supported.

CD/DVD Printing

The front tray of the Epson R270 can also be used to print on CD and DVD, but it needs to be positioned properly and any paper on the tray should be removed first before inserting a CD or DVD. There is a tray lever on the front that can be pulled down to adjust the tray.

The printer also comes with an adapter for 8cm media and Epson Print CD to help with the printing.
