Despite positioning itself as an inkjet printer for small offices, the Brother MFC-J885DW has a rather baffling 100-sheet input tray. If you print as many pages as its duty cycle allows, which are 2500 pages per month, then you’ll have to refill the tray quite often.
On the plus side, it has many other features to make up for the paper capacity. You’ll get wireless options, built-in duplexer, automatic document feeder, good speed, and more. Better yet, the Brother MFC-J885DW has a tag price that would attract most bargain seekers.
Features and Highlights
The Brother MFC-J885DW has multiple input sources. In addition to the main tray at the bottom, which is designed to handle no more than 100 sheets of paper, there is also another one on top of it that holds up to 20 sheets of 4×6-inch photo, and another one on the rear of the printer to hold a heavier-weight paper in a single-sheet mode.
The input sources also include a fold-out automatic document feeder with a capacity of 20 sheets of paper on top of the printer. On the downside, while the Brother MFC-J885DW can print 2-sided documents automatically, its automatic feeder is incapable of doing the same thing.
You can connect the Brother MFC-J885DW to a Windows computer by using a USB cord, but it would be better if you use an Ethernet or Wi-Fi instead as the wireless connection offers a multitude of extras.
After setting up the wireless connection, not only you’ll be able to print from a handheld device, you’ll also be able to make use of the web-related features to send print and scan jobs through the cloud without even turning on your PC. And what’s more, pages can also be scanned to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or searchable PDF.
To print and copy pages, the Brother MFC-J885DW uses four ink cartridges which are hidden behind a flip-down door on the right side of the front panel. The door is easy to open but users who aren’t familiar with the printer may need the manual to know where it is located and how to open it.
The front panel also has another flip-down door on its left side, which is used to hide the card slot and USB port. If you have a PictBridge-compatible camera, you can connect it to the printer through the USB port.

The Brother MFC-J885DW also supports Near Field Communication (NFC) to connect it to a compatible Android mobile device. The connection can be established simply by bringing the device to the NFC receiver on the front panel of the printer. For mobile devices that don’t have NFC functionality, you can still use Wi-Fi Direct to make the connection.
To conclude, while the printer is a bit lacking in certain areas such as print speed and paper capacity, its connectivity options provide numerous ways to print, scan, copy and fax pages, not to mention that it has a tempting price for a multifunction device.
