Although TechSmith Camtasia 2024 can edit video as well, it is best known as a screen recording software that can run on Windows and Mac. Its set of features is aimed mainly at creating presentation, tutorial, product review, webinar, and similar types of videos by means of screen capture. The recording output can then be edited before publishing.

TechSmith Camtasia 2024 includes two separate applications: Camtasia Recorder 2024 to record your screen and Camtasia 2024 to edit the recording output. The former can be launched either from the Start menu or within the latter.

Features and Highlights

Screen Recorder

When you launch the screen recorder, a rectangle of dotted lines appears on the screen. This is the recording area. You can specify which part of your screen to be recorded by either manually dragging the rectangle borders, choose one of the resolution presets available in the application, or by selecting Choose Region which allows you to screen capture the target area.

The default frame rate is 30 fps, which can be changed to 60 fps from the preferences window, but the TSC2 encoder must also be changed to H.264 to be able to record at this frame rate.

Camtasia Rev

Once you finish recording, the output will open in Camtasia Rev. This is where you can adjust the size, layout, and background of the video. Several effects are also available. You can apply all these effects or only some of them. There is a preview window that shows real-time updates as you make changes.

If you’re satisfied with the result, you can use the Export option to save it to your local storage, share it to Screencast, or upload it to YouTube. Both the latter require you to login.

Video Editor

If Camtasia Rev fails to live up to your expectation, you can click the Edit in Camtasia button to send the video to the editor, which provides you with more control to edit the video to your liking.

In Camtasia Rev, you can apply some cursor effects, but in the video editor, you have even more options available. In addition to customizing the appearance of your mouse cursor, you can also apply some effects to mouse events.

Visual effects such as Device Frame, Drop Shadow, Corner Rounding, Cursor Path Creator, Interactive Hotspot, and many more, are available as well. Background can be easily removed. There is a variety of annotation options for blurring, highlighting, pixelating, and adding shapes, arrows, lines, etc.

The developer has done a good job at designing an easy-to-navigate interface for Camtasia, but new users are still likely to find difficulty completing some tasks due to the large number of features it has.
