The Epson M2170 is a monochrome inkjet printer designed as an upgraded version of the print-only M1170. There is a scanner built into the printer, so users can scan and copy pages too. But unlike the more expensive Epson M3170, this one doesn’t do fax.

Besides not having fax capability, it’s also missing an automatic document feeder (ADF). It does have an LCD screen, but it’s smaller than the one on the M3170 and isn’t a touchscreen. As for the rest of the features, you still get the same print speed, paper capacity, and network versatility.

A Scanner Without ADF

The Epson M2170 can save you money on the initial price, but the lack of an ADF makes it less convenient when there are multi-page documents need to be scanned or copied.

No ADF means you’ll need to load each page by hand, which could result in frustration when you’re scanning a lot, even if it only happens occasionally. But if you usually scan a few pages at a time, skipping the convenience of an ADF might be worth it to save some money.

Flexible Connectivity Options

The 3-in-1 monochrome printer supports desktop printing, mobile printing, and cloud printing. No matter where you go, you can always connect to the printer via the internet.

When you are in the same room as the printer, you can connect your smartphone to the printer even if none of the devices is connected to any network, thanks to a technology called Wi-Fi Direct. To be able to take advantage of this convenience, however, both devices must support the technology.

An Entry-Level Performer

The AIO unit churns out prints at 20 ppm, handles copies at 17.0 ppm, and scans at a decent 7.0 ipm. Printing at lower quality can boost the print speed up to 39 ppm.

The ink tank can handle up to 6,000 pages when filled with a high-capacity ink bottle, but its potential is capped by the printer’s maximum monthly duty cycle, which tops out at 2,000 pages
