Around three years after the first installment was released, Sora and his friends are back in action in the sequel, Kingdom Hearts II. Just like before, they are still at war with the Darkness, a force as strong as the Light. The Darkness can cause a person to lose his heart and eventually become a Nobody.

The sequel sees new improvements that make it more enjoyable to play. Among the major improvements are the Drive Form and Reaction Command, both of which can be used for combat.

Features and Highlights

One of the features in Kingdom Hearts II is Item Synthesis. It allows the protagonist to have powerful weapons with the help of creatures named Moogles that have made their appearances since the first installment of Kingdom Hearts. However, the required materials to make weapons have to be collected first. In addition to weapons, the materials can also be used to make equipment and items.

The game also has what is called as Recipe. A recipe is a list of ingredients to make an item. Some powerful items cannot be made without the recipes. So, you have to find the recipe first if you want to make a specific item. When you visit a Moogle shop, the recipe needs to be given to the Moogle.

The recipes are scattered across various locations in the game. Some of the recipes are Guard Recipe, Recovery Recipe , Ultimate Recipe, Star Recipe, and Moon Recipe. If you want to have the most powerful weapon, find the Ultimate Recipe.

Sora also has a special ability called Drive Form, which is one of the improvements in Kingdom Hearts II over the original. The ability allows him to transform into another form and execute special attacks. In short, it makes him stronger. Every form that he can transform into can level up by gaining experiences. For example, every time Sora defeats a Heartless, the level of Wisdom Form will increase.

Reaction Command is a new feature in Kingdom Hearts II which is mainly useful for battle. It triggers a particular action at a certain moment. It can also be used for non-battle purposes such as inspecting inanimate items, talking to NPCs, and opening chests more quickly.

Reversal is a part of the Reaction Command. It is used to confuse Dusk in combat. Some of the others are Fail-Safe to turn an enemy who is about to perform a self-destruction into a temporary powerful weapon, and Dual Stance that gives Sora an opportunity to end his enemies in one move as long as you can perform the attack successfully.

Drive Gauge is an important element in Kingdom Hearts II. At the beginning Sora has three Drive Points as shown in the Drive Gauge. Its level will increase up to seven as Sora defeats more enemies. The level is one of the aspects that affect the duration of a Drive Form. The other aspect is the Form itself. The higher the level of the Form, the faster the Gauge drains away.
