    Need Updated version!

The first-person shooter Half-Life is Valve’s debut game that brings you the thrilling experience of fighting violent aliens from another dimension. Not only it was a commercial success, it also influenced the first-person shooter genre.

The player takes control of a scientist who get trapped in a research facility overrun with the aliens that attack him and the rest of the facility’s personnel at every opportunity. What makes the game more entertaining is that it includes puzzle solving elements too so it is not just another action game where you simply shoot down enemies to win.

Features and Highlights

Half-Life

Half-Life’s difficulty option is split into three levels: Easy, Normal, and Difficult. The protagonist of the story is Dr. Gordon Freeman, and the game begins with him riding the tram to go to a lab in his work place, the Black Mesa Research Facility. This first chapter ends when the tram reaches its destination.

What follows after is the second chapter titled Anomalous Materials. Gordon interacts with some people as he goes to the test chamber. After preparing the machine for the experiment, the sample he is waiting for arrives, and then he starts the experiment. Soon he finds out that he should have never done what he has just done as it triggers a disaster event he has never thought to happen, an event known as Resonance Cascade.

Because of the event, a dimensional rift is created, and alien creatures begin to appear in the facility. They come from a dimension known as Xen. Gordon has to fight the aliens by whatever weapon he can find, even if it is just a crowbar.

Gordon finds out later that the enemies are not just aliens. The arrival of the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU) escalates the situation even further as they are sent not just to eliminate the alien creatures but also the personnel of the facility to prevent the incident from leaking to the public. Working together with the surviving personnel, Gordon fights both the military unit and alien creatures.

For melee attacks, he uses a crowbar that he finds not long after the facility’s building receives a structural damage due to the unforeseen consequences of the experiment. Later in the game he will find other weapons, two of which are experimental weapons named Gluon Gun and Tau Cannon. Another ranged weapon is Colt Python revolver that can kill certain enemies in one shot. It is powerful but cannot be used as often as Gordon wants to because of the very limited ammunition.

The use of scripted sequences to tell its story is the part of the reasons of how Half-Life was different from the other games at the time. Throughout the game, the player sees everything from the first-person viewpoint. And instead of levels, the game uses chapters to divide the plot line. When fighting the aliens, sometimes the non playable characters assist the player. On the whole, Half-Life is entertaining, except for the short loading pauses between the connecting scenes.
