Devil May Cry is a demon hunting game which was originally created to be the sixth installment of the Resident Evil series but was later released under a new title. The reason being is that the combat system was deemed unfit for the franchise. The decision of the development team, who were persuaded by Shinji Mikami, led to a successful project which produced another money making machine for the company.

The game follows Dante, a half human and half demon who has made a choice to become a demon hunter for a personal vendetta and money. His mission is to find those who are responsible for the death of his family and exterminate them for good, along with the rest of the evil demons.

Features and Highlights

Dante is sitting in his office when a woman suddenly breaks through the door and attack him after a brief conversation, but the attack does not work on him. The sword in his chest which was stabbed by her does not affect him in the slightest. He pulls it out without feeling any pain at all.

It turns out that the woman just wants to find out how strong Dante is. She asked him to help her to destroy the Underworld. Instead of getting angry with her attack that could have easily killed him if he were an ordinary human, he gets surprised to see that her face resembles to the person he dears, his mother.

Trish, the name of that woman, says that Mundus is going to return. Dante finally agrees to work with her not only because the striking similarity between her face and his mother’s, but also because of Mundus, the demon emperor who murders his brother and mother.

As with many other games, Devil May Cry has several difficulty levels. Easy is the nicest option is you don’t want to spend time feeling frustrated because of repeated failures. Normal is the mode where the difficulty is increased but not too much. Hard is the one to go for if you like challenges, and Dante Must Die is probably the worst choice for people with anger management issues.

Dante can use a lot of weapons, including Ebony and Ivory, which are a pair of guns capable of firing demonic bullets. The damage level these guns inflict on the enemies are low but the fire rate is high. As the game progresses, Dante will get more weapons, like Alastor. It is a powerful sword that only the chosen one can wield it.

After Dante finds Alastor, he will be able to perform new techniques, such as Round Trip to attack a demon from a distance, Air Hike to enhance his movement, and Devil Trigger to increase his attack speed.

There are 23 missions and 12 secret missions in Devil May Cry. One of them is Destroyer of Ardor where Dante has to fight a giant spider that can talk. This mission contains a secret mission named Critical Hit that Dante should complete after defeating the spider.
