Need for Speed – Underground is different from its predecessors in that it includes a storyline for the first time in the series and a garage where the player can customize the cars in possession. Its huge success led to the development of the sequel.

Features and Highlights

There are five race event types in Need for Speed – Underground. Of all those five, Drift Races are the most difficult challenges. Rather than who complete the laps first, the winner is decided upon who can achieve the highest score by performing flawless drifting techniques along the course.

A Drag Race is perhaps the race type that looks simple but it can actually be difficult. While it is true that the course is just a straight line, the participants must look out for the traffic to prevent collisions. Once the car collides with the traffic, it is over. The engine overheat is another problem that the participants must take into account.

A Circuit Race is an event that takes place in a looped track involving a number of racers. The one who completes the laps faster than the others will become the champion.

The Knockout Race is similar to the Circuit Race. What makes the two different is that the last one who finishes a lap is not allowed to continue the race anymore. Because of how it works, only two racers will be left in the final lap to decide who among them will come out as the winner.

During the Career mode, the player will be assisted by a friend named Samantha who knows a lot about the world of underground street racing. With her help, the player can join various race events. Despite the successive victories, the most prominent racer in the city named Eddie underestimates the player and even goes as far as throwing insults.

As the player gains even more fame though, Eddie is eventually forced to do something. He has a condition that the player must fulfill in order for them to compete in a race, and that is to challenge Samantha in a sprint race.

The player agrees to the condition, a decision which eventually breaks the friendship with Samantha. Making up for the mistake, the player participates in a race to win back Samantha’s car, which is a Honda Civic Si. Once the player obtains the car, it is returned to her.

Need for Speed – Underground is a superb car racing game. The lack of proper damage is perhaps a bit annoying, but the spectacular races will most likely to rob the player’s attention, making the annoyances seem insignificant. The storyline is a welcome addition in the franchise as it allows the player to be more emotionally attached to the overall game.
