While Need for Speed – Carbon uses the same gameplay mechanics as its predecessors, the police chases are not as intense as it used to be, making the game less enticing to some fans. The tenth installment released in 2006 was still a commercial hit nonetheless.

Need for Speed – Carbon features many returning and new gameplay assets, including the ability to modify the appearance of a car by adjusting its components. Online play was also supported but the service was unfortunately ended in 2021.

Features and Highlights

The plot takes place in Palmont City which consists of several districts controlled by rival crews. The car class that the player chooses to take at the beginning of the Career mode cannot be changed. The first district where the player will begin racing, as well as the order of the racing events, depends on the initially selected car class too.

There are three car classes which include Muscle, Exotic, and Tuner. The cars are also categorized based on their performances: Tier 1 for low performance cars, Tier 2 for moderate performance cars, and Tier 3 for high performance cars.

Unlike its predecessors, there are more muscle cars in Need for Speed – Carbon. These classic American cars have one advantage over the other two cars. Its acceleration is the fastest. On the other hands, the Exotic class offers the highest speed and the Tuners are made up of cars with excellent handling.

Need for Speed – Carbon also brings in a new feature called Autosculpt, which is a capability to design the exterior parts of a vehicle. More customization options can also be found in the game.

Some of the race events featured in other titles are also available in Need for Speed – Carbon such as Circuit, Sprint, and Drift. Additionally, there is Canyon Duel.

It is a unique race where one of the racers must tail the opponent. Points are earned during the race by staying behind the opponent’s car. The closer the distance between the two, the more points will be earned by the chasing player. To win the race, the chasing player must pass the opponent. Nitrous cannot be used in the race.

Speedtrap is a race event with a track consisting of a number of checkpoints. The speed of each participant is recorded and the participant who scores the highest total point wins the race. Some of the Speedtrap events are Bowen Avenue, Mason Fountain, Million Dollar Drive, Stonewall Tunnel, Park Drive, and Foundry Road. The event with the largest checkpoints is Newport Trainyard.

Canyon Drift is a type of a drift event in Need for Speed – Carbon, which is more challenging than usual as it is a downhill race and, unlike other drift races, the traffic is not completely nonexistent. All it takes is just one collision to make a victory impossible to achieve. The chance of colliding into traffic or hitting a wall is fairly high since it is a race from top to bottom which makes the cars tend to run faster.
