He is a specially trained military operative. His real name is John. At the beginning of his military career, he was trained by a fierce woman known as The Boss. In the story of Metal Gear Solid 3 – Snake Eater, he is sent on a mission to rescue a Soviet rocket scientist, Dr. Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov. He is given a codename, Naked Snake.

Since it is an infiltration mission with the purpose of saving a life, John must avoid being seen by the enemy and leave no traces behind. He is issued with basic weapons to complete his mission. A knife and tranquilizer gun.

Features and Highlights

The tranquilizer  gun that John brings with has a suppressor, but the suppressor’s durability will deteriorate every time the gun is fired. It won’t be able to suppress the noise of the gun anymore once the durability reaches zero. So, the gun should not be used unless there is no other way out.

In addition to the weapons, John also has medical supplies in his backpack. In the initial phase of the game, the backpack is stuck on a tree so he has to climb it to retrieve the backpack. Climbing the tree is a part of the tutorial stage where his contact gives him instructions on what to do and how to do it, such as telling him which buttons to press to climb the tree and to take the weapon out of the backpack.

John is also equipped with items. First of all, a motion detector. As the name suggest, it is a battery powered device that has the capability to detect nearby motion. The moving objects are displayed as dots on its display.

The second device is AP Sensor used to detect lifeforms which is useful in situations where John is suspicious of his surrounding and wants to make that there is no enemy nearby. However, it lacks the accuracy to pinpoint the location of detected lifeforms.

Created by one of the brightest minds in Force Operation X (FOX), Active Sonar is another detection device that uses sound waves to detect nearby objects. Due to how it works, it must be used with caution as it can also reveal John’s location to enemies nearby. The detection is highly accurate but the device can be jammed.

John must do everything in his power to complete the mission, but the betrayal of the woman who trained him in the past ruins everything. The story of the game becomes even more interesting from then on.

The fake death pill is the item that John only uses in critical situations. It puts him in a state that gives an impression of him being dead. The pill can save him when the moment comes but there is a risk of losing his life in the process. The revival pill implanted in his teeth is the item that can awaken him from the state.

Despite receiving tons of compliments, the number of sales of Metal Gear Solid 3 – Snake Eater was not as good as its predecessor. It was still a commercial hit nonetheless.
