ICO might be a good example of how an amazing video game doesn’t always end up as a commercial success. It is an adventure game released in 2001 after around four years of development.

The game tells a story of a young boy who has to struggle with rare circumstances that put him in miserable situations from time to time. His fate is a cruel one, but he doesn’t give up.

Features and Highlights

ICO is a third-person game. As the player, you take control of the young boy whose name is Ico. Because of an ancient curse, he was born with a pair of horns, which make the village’s people where he grows up hate him.

One day, when he was twelve years old, a group of masked men took him to a castle to be presented as a sacrifice for the good of the village, but a strange phenomenon occurs which gives him an opportunity to escape from the situation.

As he explores the castle, he encounters a young girl who later proves herself to be very helpful in their attempts to escape from the place. Her name is Yorda whose mother is the castle’s Queen.

The Queen is a heartless mother. Instead of showering Yorda with love, the Queen has a plan to extend her own lifespan by sacrificing that daughter of hers.

Ico frees her from the cage where she is being locked within, and they try to escape together afterward. Yorda is powerless against their enemies, the shadow creatures, but she knows how to activate various magical devices in the castle.

The shadow creatures are minions of the castle. They appear in various shapes to attack Ico and Yorda. Ico has the strength to fight the shadow creatures, but everything would be over if they pull him into one of the portals where they emerge from. Ico utilizes whatever weapon he finds in the castle to slay the enemies. His weakest weapon is a wooden stick, which he also uses to solve puzzles.

The weapon which is the most vital to their attempts to escape is the Queen’s Sword. It is a massive sword with a curved hilt and long chain. It has the power to activate magical devices in the castle just like Yorda, and it is the only weapon strong enough to be used to fight the queen.

The other swords that can be found in the castle are useful to defeat the shadow creatures but lacks the power to deal with the queen. It is even less powerful than the light saber which can extend very long when Ico wields it while holding hands with Yorda.

Mace is also a weapon available in the castle and more powerful than the sticks and ordinary swords. It is categorized as a secret weapon in ICO, which can be obtained from a secret room located in the Sluice area.
