The first release of Guitar Hero took place in November 2005. The game has a simple yet addicting gameplay where the player must press buttons repeatedly according to the musical notes that appear on the screen.
The reaction to the game was overwhelmingly positive, leading to the releases of sequels and expansions. It didn’t take a long time after the release for the game to become a commercial hit, earning $45 million in 2005 alone, so it wasn’t a surprise that the game soon became a franchise.
Features and Highlights
Guitar Hero provides a number of difficulty levels. A beginner should stick to the Easy difficulty level where only three buttons are used. The amount of musical notes that scroll down the screen is also greatly reduced.
As soon as the player is familiar with how the game works, the player can increase the challenge a bit by playing the game at Medium difficulty level. It uses four buttons and there are more musical notes on the screen. The speed is also slightly faster than the Easy difficulty level.
Hard is the next difficulty level where all five buttons are used with more notes. If the player finds it less challenging than expected, there is still the Expert difficulty level which is faster and uses more complicated note patterns than those of the Hard level.
Career is one of the game modes available in Guitar Hero. In the mode, the player must play the songs that are divided into tiers without fail. Every tier has an encore song. Every time a tier is successfully completed, the next tier appears. The player can complete the Career mode after successfully playing the final encore song. The total score that the player achieves in the Career Mode can then be used to determine his or her skill.
Quick Play is another game mode of Guitar Hero where the player can play any song as long the song has been unlocked. To unlock a song, the tier where that song appears must be completed first in the Career mode.
Multiplayer is the game mode provided for two players who want to prove whose skill is better. The one with the higher score is the winner.
Tutorials is a part of the game modes that a beginner should not skip. In addition to the basic lessons where the player is taught on how to play the musical notes, there are also Star Power lessons which are important to follow to be able to achieve higher scores.
Guitar Hero has more than forty songs. Thirty of them can be found in the Career mode, while the rest are part of the bonus songs.

When the player is playing a song, there is the Rock Meter on the screen that measures the player’s performance in real time. If a note is hit correctly, the needle of the meter moves to the right. If the player misses a note, the needle moves to the left. Interestingly, the guitarists’ facial expressions on screen changes according to where the needle moves.
