Call of Duty 2 – Big Red One has more than ten campaign missions. Most of the time the player will take control of a soldier. The exception is the bomber mission where the soldier’s brother is the playable character.

The game is focused on the achievements of the Big Red One, which is the nickname of the 1st Infantry Division, during the World War II. In addition to the standard weapons that each soldier is issued with, there are other various weapons that can be used in the battlefield, like the machine gun in the second mission campaign when the infantry is ambushed by enemies.

Features and Highlights

Call of Duty 2 – Big Red One begins with the cutscene of “We’ve Been Through Worse” showing the interactions among the members of 1st Infantry Division, which is then interrupted by Captain Norman Delaney who lets them know about the situation and what they have to do to solve it.

He orders the playable character, Sergeant Roland Roger, and the squad to complete the mission. And not long after, the real action kicks in. This level is more of a shooting tutorial that takes place somewhere in France.

The second level takes place in Algeria. When the members of the infantry are having conversation while riding on a half-track, suddenly a gun shot is heard, taking the life of the gunner. Sergeant Roland Roger has to defend the convoy at all cost until they reach the rally point. If the playable character survives, he will be ordered to clear the barracks together with the squad.

The third mission takes place in Tunisia, North Africa, on February 13th, 1943. The player rides a tank with the squad and eliminates all the threats they find along the road. The mission is ended by taking out the anti aircraft cannon so that the planes can attack the target. From the beginning until the end of the mission, the player uses tank to neutralize the enemies.

On February 19th, the infantry is attacked again, forcing the player to destroy the tanks. The enemies successfully destroy his half-track though, leaving the player with no choice but to hold the line until the backup arrives.

The fifth mission is to secure a town. The player’s role is to prevent the enemies’ tanks from going through their defense. More enemies will come so the player has to try harder to survive. In the middle of the fight, a friendly squad comes to help before letting the player knows that there are others who are pinned down at a location.

Some of the weapons available in Call of Duty 2 – Big Red One are the bolt action rifle Karabiner 98k, the semi automatic rifle M1 Cabine, the submachine gun Beretta M1938A, the semi automatic pistol Walther P38, and M2 Frag Grenade.

In addition to the single player mode, a multiplayer mode is also supported in the PlayStation 2 version of the game. It features several maps such as Bizerte, Gela, and Peaks.
