The game follows the struggle of a flight squadron which is composed of four plane units. Its name is Wardog Squadron, led by an Osean pilot known as Callsign Blaze. The squadron’s popularity soars high after their huge achievements in the war between Yuktobania and Osea.

Features and Highlights

Captain Bartlett is the leader of Wardog Squadron when Callsign Blaze is assigned to the squadron, but one day Bartlett goes MIA after shot down by an enemy. The leader position is then handed over to Blaze and it lasts until the end of the game.

During the attack, of all the trainees, only one survives. Her name is Kei Nagase. A short haired woman who looks so harmless one might suspect that she couldn’t even hurt a fly.

Alvin H. Davenport and Hans Grimm are both members of the squadron. The former has a loud mouth but is good at lightening the mood when the situation is tense, while the latter is the youngest who lacks experience but a talented pilot.

There are plenty of aircraft available for purchase over the course of the game. Some are real life aircraft, some others are fictional aircraft. The more amount of experiences the player collects, the more aircraft will be unlocked for purchase.

The list of the playable aircraft in Ace Combat 5 – The Unsung War includes A-10A Thunderbolt II, ADF-01 FALKEN, EA-18G Growler, EA-6B Prowler, F-117A Nighthawk, F-14A Tomcat, and F-14B Tomcat.

The player needs money to purchase an aircraft. One way to collect the money is to complete mission objectives. More money will be awarded if the player can perform better than the expectation.

There are six difficulty levels ranging from the Very Easy to Ace level. The hardest level the player selects, the smarter the enemies are, and the stronger the enemy’s attacks are. One missile is sufficient to destroy the player’s aircraft. In the easiest level, an enemy needs to hit the player’s airplane several times to bring it down.

Since the player assumes the role of the squadron leader, commands can be issued to the wingmen so that the squadron can perform a tactical attack successfully.

Ace Combat 5 – The Unsung War has more than one game mode. In addition to the campaign mode that follows the storyline, there are also tutorial mode and arcade mode where the player can jump into action as soon as possible.
